Miner Family Vineyards: Always Ask for Oracle

Miner Family Vineyards

Miner Family Vineyards is a relatively new winery, founded in 1998 by Dave Miner.  Dave actually fell into the wine business from the software business in 1993 when his uncle asked him to run his wine operation at Oakville Ranch Vineyards.

When we arrived for a quick tasting, we found a rather social experience from the open-air seating on the top level to Scotty, our host.  Lots of guests were sitting at tables on the upper level, enjoying their wine.  Even when we entered the tasting room, the bar was quite full.  Fortunately, we noticed a smaller bar tucked around the corner.  Scotty encouraged us to join him and another couple for a tasting.

Miner produces a lot of wines: Cab, Petite Syrah, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Rosato, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viogner.  We stuck to our usual “focus on the reds” tasting strategy and went through a number of wines in their red portfolio.

Our tasting went through their Cab, Merlot, Sangiovese to name a few, but their signature Bordeaux blend Oracle was on the premium tasting list.  Luckily for us, Miner appeared to have a rule that if you asked for a pour of Oracle, they never declined.  Scotty also seemed to enjoy our conversation enough to allow us to compare the current Oracle with an Oracle from an earlier year as well as an additional Cab.  Either that or he felt bad for disagreeing that there was such a thing as “education games”, the kind Linda works on.

We walked away with a bottle of their Sangio and an Oracle, but more importantly the knowledge to keep chatting with the hosts and don’t be afraid to ask for an extra taste.

Bordeaux Blend, Napa Valley, Red Wine, Sangiovese
